Non-surgical rhinoplasty, often referred to as a "liquid rhinoplasty" is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the nose without the need for surgery. This technique has gained popularity as a non-permanent and less risky alternative to traditional surgical rhinoplasty. It involves the use of injectable dermal fillers to reshape and contour the nose, addressing cosmetic concerns such as bumps, irregularities, asymmetry, or a drooping tip.

During the consultation, your concerns and aesthetic goals are discussed to deliver optimal results. Dr Michael Zoran will perform an ultrasound examination of your nose to assess the anatomy and look for prominent blood vessels in the area. This is done to prioritise safety when injecting into the nose.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is not a painful procedure as local anaesthetic can be applied to the nose, numbing the area. At most, some may describe some injections feel like "popping a pimple".

The fillers work by adding volume and strategically reshaping the nose, effectively smoothing out imperfections and enhancing the overall aesthetic. Since hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary, their effects can last from several months to a couple of years, depending on the product used and individual factors.

One of the key advantages of non-surgical rhinoplasty is that it involves minimal downtime and is associated with fewer risks and complications compared to surgical rhinoplasty. Patients can often return to their normal activities shortly after the procedure. The most common side effects seen with this procedure is mild swelling and bruising, which typically last a few days. Many clients often read about filler-related blindness or vision loss. This is a very rare side effect and has only been reported in 12 cases in over a decade in Australia, and is not specific to nose filler. The use of ultrasound and evidence-based injection technique minimises this risk significantly.

All your questions answered!

What is non-surgical rhinoplasty?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty a.k.a liquid rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that uses dermal fillers to alter the shape and appearance of the nose without the need for surgery. There is no cutting of the skin.

How does it work?

A thicker type of hyaluronic acid-based filler is carefully injected into specific areas of the nose to add volume, shape, and contour. By using dermal fillers, the nose can be moulded into the ideal shape.

What issues can non-surgical rhinoplasty address?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is often used to correct minor imperfections such as bumps, asymmetry, or irregularities on the nose bridge. Most commonly it is used to enhance the side profile, giving it a straight appearance. Nose-tip shaping and elevation are also routinely performed for clients who feel their nose-tip move when smiling or appear round and bulbous.

Is the procedure painful?

Discomfort is usually minimal during the procedure. Most of the injections will have minimal or no pain. Most describe it as similar to popping a pimple.

How long does the procedure take?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a relatively quick procedure, often taking about 15-30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the treatment. However, Dr Michael will often use ultrasound before the treatment for added safety.

Do you use ultrasound for this treatment?

Yes. Ultrasound is used before the treatment to analyse your nose anatomy and identify where the major blood vessels appear. This is to enhance the safety and accuracy of the procedure.

How long do the results last?

Results from non-surgical rhinoplasty are temporary and typically last around 8-12 months. As the body gradually absorbs the filler small doses may be required to maintain the appearance. It is important to attend a review in the first month for any additional top-up to the treatment to enhance longevity.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects include swelling, bruising, and redness at the injection sites. Serious complications such as blindness, vascular occlusion, and skin necrosis are rare. Thorough preparation, ultrasound and injection techniques all help to reduce these risks.

Can non-surgical rhinoplasty fix all nose concerns?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is effective for certain cosmetic issues, but it may not be suitable for major restructuring or functional concerns, such as breathing difficulties.

Who is a good candidate for non-surgical rhinoplasty?

Candidates typically include individuals seeking minor cosmetic improvements to their noses who want a non-invasive option. You may not be suitable if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding woman, are an individual with certain neuromuscular disorders, or are allergic to the ingredients in certain medications or bee-stings.

Can I return to normal activities immediately after the procedure?

Most people can resume their regular activities immediately after non-surgical rhinoplasty. However, there might be some swelling or bruising that could take a few days to subside.

Is non-surgical rhinoplasty reversible?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers used in non-surgical rhinoplasty can be partially or fully reversed using an enzyme called hyaluronidase if necessary.

Can I have this procedure if I have had a surgical rhinoplasty in the past?

Yes. Often dermal fillers can be used to correct any deficits from previous rhinoplasty surgeries, rather than performing repeat surgery.
